Afghan Rulers Employed Discarded UK Equipment to Track Down Afghans Who Worked With Allied Forces, Investigation Learns
An informant has told a parliamentary probe that British authorities abandoned classified technology permitting Afghanistan's rulers to locate Afghans that had served with western forces.
Information Leak Puts Thousands at Risk
The whistleblower, known as Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the security lapse were advised to change residences and alter their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from militant forces.
MPs are investigating the UK government's management of a catastrophic disclosure of confidential data affecting approximately 19k individuals who had requested to move to the United Kingdom to escape militant rule.
Data Disclosure Happened
A spreadsheet containing confidential details, such as identities, phone numbers and sometimes family information, was accidentally leaked by an official employed at special operations center in last year.
The leak came to light months later, when details of nine people who had requested to relocate to the UK were posted on online platforms.
Militant Technology
It appears there is a misunderstanding that militant forces lack similar capabilities that we have,” Person A informed MPs.
All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. If they have mobile details, they can trace your precise location. This is exactly how specialized teams did.”
During testimony about whether the Taliban possessed necessary encryption, the source declared: “They possess all resources.”
Aftermath of the Information Leak
Early investigations submitted to the investigation indicated that at least 49 kin and colleagues of people concerned by the breach had been murdered.
A gag order regarding the breach was put in force in last year and restricted all details regarding the matter from media reporting until mid-2025.
Protective Actions
Given injunction limitations, Person A and the non-governmental organization she was working with told affected households they were assisting that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been breached”.
“We recommended that they change residence if they could and changed their contact details. These represented the crucial data that, if authorities obtained this information, would cause their location being found,” Person A explained.
Challenged Assessments
The source disputed that internal investigation carried out by a retired civil servant had been mistaken to state that the possession of the information by the regime was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.
“The important fact is that affected people are not confronting militant forces; they remain concealed. All concerns relate to their previous employment.”
She detailed horrific violence suffered by affected individuals, comprising electrocution, waterboarding, and severe beatings.
“Instances include toddlers who have had bones crushed to pressure households to say where someone is,” the whistleblower revealed.
