Alexander Zverev Battles Felix Auger-Aliassime in ATP Finals Clash

Introduction

The inherent challenges of round-robin tennis typically lead to during this phase of the season-ending championships we’re often left confused, hastily looking for a calculator and attempting to calculate the mind-boggling permutations of qualification. But tonight’s match between Alexander Zverev and Auger-Aliassime, mercifully, is easy. This is a winner-takes-all affair: the victor sets up a semifinal contest against Carlos Alcaraz at this year-end tournament; the loser is eliminated.

The German is the frontrunner for this: the elite athlete is the more experienced competitor, has claimed the title at this tournament on two prior occasions and holds the advantage in their personal record with six victories against three defeats, having won both their past encounters on an enclosed hard court.

But … this is the surface on which Felix has secured the bulk of his trophies, he is in great form after his compelling comeback against Shelton on Wednesday and he took out Zverev in the US Championships initial phase in August. Plus, conditions are faster in the host city than at Flushing Meadows, which provides an additional advantage in AA’s favor.

If Zverev holds back, as he did against Sinner, and Auger-Aliassime takes it to the German with his effective service game and bold strategy, it might very well be the 25-year-old Canadian – the earlier standout who was previously positioned ahead of Alcaraz and Sinner to take over from the tennis icons – who secures the dubious honour of facing the top-ranked player tomorrow.

The match starts: at around 20:30 in the host city, 7:30 PM in the UK.
