Barry Manilow to Undergo a Procedure for Lung Cancer.

The singer has disclosed that he was diagnosed with a cancerous growth in his lung and will undergo a surgical procedure.

Cancer Caught Early

The legendary 82-year-old artist, whose parade of upbeat chart-toppers from "Copacabana" established him as one of pop music’s enduringly popular entertainers, will have surgery to take out a section of lung tissue in an effort to fight off the condition, which is in its early stages.

“As many of you know, I recently endured six weeks of bronchitis followed by a return of another five weeks.

“Despite the fact that I was recovered from the illness and performing again at the Westgate Las Vegas, my wonderful doctor ordered an MRI just to make sure that there were no issues.

“The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my lung that must be removed. It’s sheer fortune (and a skilled doctor) that it was discovered so early.”

Postponed Performances

He has rescheduled a series of forthcoming live performances, but indicated he would be back on stage by Valentine’s Day for his long-running concert series at his Vegas home.

He continued: “The doctors do not believe it has metastasized and I’m having examinations to support their conclusion. So, that’s it. Chemo is not needed. Radiation therapy is off the table. Just rest and recuperation and I Love Lucy reruns.

“I’m eagerly awaiting until I rejoin my second home at the Westgate Las Vegas for our Valentine’s weekend concerts.”

Professional and Personal Journey

Manilow is currently in the 16th year of a residency in Nevada. The singer has enjoyed a career spanning many years in the spotlight and came out as gay in 2017, after wedding his longtime partner and manager privately in 2014.

The duo were in a clandestine relationship for over 35 years. In 2023, Manilow reflected on how crucial Kief had been to him during his rise to peak fame in the 1970s.

“As my career exploded, it was just hectic. And, you know, coming home to an empty hotel room, you can get into a lot of problems if you, you know, you’re on your own repeatedly,” he said.

“But I found my partner right around when it was exploding. And I no longer had to go back to those empty hotel rooms. I had somebody to be vulnerable with or to share joys with.

“I desire that newcomers today don’t have to go back to those rooms by themselves, because you might succumb to pitfalls. I never did. But it was very solitary until I met Garry. And then it was joyful.”
