One can find many contenders to claim the title of “planet’s greatest innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.
According to a recent publication, however, that title should go to the automated timber mill invented through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Before automated cutting, constructing a simple merchant vessel required approximately 10 sawyers laboring over 90 days,” writes the author. “Using wind-driven sawmills, an identical quantity of cut lumber could be produced within seven days.”
Thanks to their speedy mechanical saw, that converted logs to boards using virtually no manual labor, the Dutch could construct vessels more quickly compared to anyone else, which unleashed a century of Dutch naval, economic as well as artistic supremacy in Europe and the world.

The inventor's sawmill, argues Dávila, represented “humanity’s first authentic factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a gear. One component converted the circular motion into vertical action to power the cutting blade. A separate mechanism transformed that same rotary motion into a lateral movement feeding the log to the blade. A geared mechanism moved the wood forward one precise increment per stroke.
“Every component seemed modest by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius was to combine these parts so the machine operated within a perfectly controlled sequence, sawing on every downward stroke and moving with each upward stroke. It was a remarkably intelligent application of fundamental components.”
