Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Charity

Relinquishing undesired offerings can be considered a little discourteous – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Charitable Auction

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell a reported 270 items bestowed upon her by foreign dignitaries on official trips. The eclectic collection is said to contain items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

The presents, together, are valued at around €800,000. The plan is to put up for sale in a public auction by a Rome-based fine art auction house. A date is yet to be set, but the goal is to hold the auction during the holiday season, with all funds raised benefiting a selection of charitable causes.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

The items are currently stored in a secure area on the third floor of the government headquarters. Sources state that Meloni furthermore planning to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been sitting unused for years.

The full gift list has not yet been officially released, but some insight emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was presented in parliament. The question raised whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being honored. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.

A Global Array of Gifts

Among the items:

  • A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from the Indian leader.
  • A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
  • A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a board, and several rugs from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the strangest gifts included the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," observers have said.

Diplomatic Backdrop

Meloni has been credited, mostly from her allies, with garnering support from foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the international platform once again.

This charitable initiative represents a novel approach to manage the state presents that build up during a political career.
