Chicago's MLB Team Land Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Two-Year Agreement.
In a major move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract bringing in the high-profile player.
Contract Details and Added Benefits
The deal grants a substantial signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with compensation of sixteen million for the next season and seventeen million for the final year.
Notably, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on award achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for winning the Most Valuable Player award.
- $500K for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for ranking in the top ten.
- An identical bonus for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.
The agreement provides that he cannot be assigned to the farm system without his permission and grants him a free agent at the end of the term. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and airfare between Japan and the U.S..
Posting Fee and Franchise History
As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a supplemental fee of any triggered incentive payments.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever Japanese to play for the South Siders, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a left-handed hitter who turns 26 in February, enters a young lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a difficult season, finishing last in the division but showing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.
Having earned Most Valuable Player honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 HRs, breaking the longstanding record for a player in Japan previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was limited to 56 games due to an side strain. Despite recording often, he hit .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBIs, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. He started playing mostly at first base, he has more recently played to the hot corner.
Global Stage Success
Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he delivered a game-ending two-base hit that scored teammates for a thrilling 6-5 victory. The following day in the final against the United States, he blasted a tying home run in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's eventual title triumph.
The lefty slugger is set to be unveiled at a press conference on the coming Monday.
