Former UK Soldier Accused of Killing Kenya Female Appears in Courtroom

A suspect has appeared in court as deportation processes commenced in the legal matter of Agnes Wanjiru, a female from Kenya who was found dead near a British army base in 2012.

The accused Robert Purkiss, thirty-eight, who is a native of the Manchester area, appeared before the Westminster court on the last Friday, and stated to the court he intended to contest the extradition request. Reports indicate that he was taken into custody on Thursday night.

An arrest warrant for the suspect was issued by a Kenyan court in Nairobi in September. The state attorneys stated before the Kenyan court that Purkiss had been charged with a single count, of killing, and that the Kenyan government would request his deportation to answer to accusations.

The defendant was once employed as a medical attendant with the regiment of the Duke of Lancaster, the infantry regiment for the English northwest, including on missions to Afghanistan.

Agnes Wanjiru, twenty-one, a beautician who had a baby daughter, vanished after a night out, and her corpse was found after two months in the premises of the hotel where she had most recently observed.

Not a single person had before been detained or accused in association with her death. The arrest of Purkiss was the result of a recent detective probe, which came after a article in the year 2021 by the Sunday Times, in which the newspaper reached out to several serving and ex-military personnel in the regiment.

The investigation has been led by Kenyan detectives, which, under a bilateral defence agreement, holds legal authority in the case.
