Hardline Former Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile New Head of State.
In a decisive final ballot, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has won the presidency in Chile.
A Commanding Triumph
With more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third presidency, having previously been defeated by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Platform Built On Security and Immigration
Noted for his strong socially conservative views and praise for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely focused on promises to address growing insecurity and drastically curb immigration.
He repeatedly blamed foreigners, notably the around 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the campaign, he delivered an ultimatum for them to depart before the new term begins or face expulsion.
His plans envisioned U.S.-style measures such as erecting camps, border walls, perimeter fencing, and bolstering the army presence on the northern border.
Amid a Regional Wave
Many observers see Kast's success as fitting into a broader rightward wave in Latin America, similar to recent electoral outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other experts further describe it as a continuation of the predictable rotation of power between left and right-wing leadership since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Governing Lacking a Solid Majority
Despite his decisive popular vote victory, Kast does not have an overall majority in parliament, neither in the lower house or the Senate, even when various conservative parties are counted together.
This legislative landscape could challenge his plans, such as a promise to cut public spending by billions within 18 months—a plan for which he has yet to offered a clear explanation.
"There are many aspects about what a Kast presidency will be that are uncertain because he has not explained the way he will do them," said a political professor.
The analyst continued, "On fiscal matters, it is very likely we will see spending cuts associated with the right-wing. But the area with far less uncertainty is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue across the race."
