India's capital Awakens to Toxic Smog Following Celebrations

Tuesday brought residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves breathing severely hazardous air that fell into the "alarming" level.

Extremely High Air Quality Readings

Multiple areas of Delhi recorded an pollution measurement over 500, which equals ten times the safe threshold recommended by the WHO.

In some locations, levels of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1,800, amounting to 15 to 20 times exceeding acceptable limits.

Fireworks Ban and New Developments

Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a complete ban on the sale and use of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the deadly pollution that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather sets in.

Yet recently, the recently formed local government appealed to the supreme court to propose a easing of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically criticized by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a compromise between "heritage and environment".

Court Decision and Enforcement

Despite concerns of medical and ecological campaigners, judges complied with the appeal, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during specific periods throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was widespread violation of the designated hours across the metropolis, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Many recording stations throughout the capital showed air quality spiking around midnight to some of the worst levels observed during celebrations in at least recent memory.

International Implications

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the festival also triggered a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming worsening atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on contaminants traveling from India following the events.

Chronic Environmental Crisis

Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in the capital have remained as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

During the festival period, the concentration of toxic particulate matter in the atmosphere has been observed to increase dramatically to 70% higher the peak records ever measured in Beijing, which was previously considered as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Multiple Contamination Contributors

The situation in the city is resulting from a mix of various sources including automobile exhaust, dust, construction activities, waste incineration and haze from agricultural fires in nearby areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, rural residents illegally ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, creating hazardous smog that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as colder air arrives.

Health and Economic Impact

Public health and economic impact on the nearly 33 million residents calling home the Delhi area is enormous, according to various research.

The contaminated air leads to elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

The pollution is projected to be accounting for ten thousand untimely deaths annually in the city.
