Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the death toll is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
