Manchester United Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
The forward, with half a year left on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be building positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
