The boxing world has been a significant decline this season, with limited compelling matchups and markedly reduced compelling bouts than typical. The anticipation of a serious and intriguing heavyweight clash between Joseph Parker and Wardley at the O₂ Arena brings a measure of relief to the challenged industry. Wardley, who began in white-collar boxing, who only began his boxing career when he was 20, had no amateur boxing history and has perpetually battled skepticism over his skill set. But he is similarly close to a world title challenge.

“This is the biggest bout, at the moment, in the heavyweight category. Both these fighters have stepped up when neither of them was required to take this bout. Joe Parker is the interim WBO titleholder and they have already ordered Usyk to fight him, but he was sidelined. Joseph insists on fighting.

“Wardley is similarly well-placed and he merely needed to be patient for his chance. He said ‘I refuse.’ He chose to box – and with Parker because it gives him a chance to jump the queue.”

Parker's Viewpoint

Parker, who turns 34 in January, said: “It's win or go home. I am not considering defeat. I respect my opponent and what he has done and his preparation for this fight. But I am on a higher plane and I am planning to demonstrate it on the day of the bout.”

Wardley's Stance

Wardley will be 31 in December, and he said: “It's a huge evening for the pair of us. It is undoubtedly the largest contest of my professional life and the greatest challenge I've faced. But every time I step up I elevate my performance. Saturday will be the same. The divide between Parker's level and where people think I am has been a common theme during my entire career.

“He has been going around the block for a long time, with a numerous contests on his record. Certainly not is he an senior boxer but he has been in the game for a long time and had some heavy fights. I've also endured brutal fights and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a significantly more of those fights than I have.”

But the suspicion remains that Parker will be too experienced, and too skilful, for his opponent. He should win a bruising battle with the confidence that he is the prime candidate for a title shot against Usyk – still the world’s best heavyweight by a significant margin.
