The direst potential impacts of the global heating for the UK have been detailed by scientists, encompassing a searing 4C rise in temperatures to a 6.5-foot rise in ocean levels. An alternative projection predicts a drop of 6C in temperature following the collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt agriculture and power requirements.
Possible Extremes, Not Guarantees
These consequences, some of which are associated with climate tipping points, are viewed as improbable but possible. The scientists stated that these models plugged a hole in planning that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for catastrophic possibilities.
"The worst-case scenarios we have outlined are not forecasts, but they are credible," commented Nigel Arnell who oversaw the analysis. "The nation has been planning in the absence of the methods to plan for worst-case scenarios. We've now provided decision-makers what they need to plan for environmental results they pray never occur, but dare not dismiss."
A Spectrum of Harsh Climate Projections
Another collection of severe models sets out the possible scale of extreme weather between now and the close of the 2100s. These suggest that temperatures could skyrocket in certain periods by up to 6C above average, while rainfall could be 300% of normal levels.
The probability of the worst-case outcomes occurring could not be calculated due to uncertainty about what measures will be taken to address climate change and how the Earth's systems will behave. This analysis was described as similar to national security risk assessments or scenario planning for the banking sector.
Major Possibility Highlights
- Four-Degree Warming: Global temperatures exceeding 4C by 2100 could happen if emissions cuts fails or if powerful amplifying effects including the Amazon rainforest dying release its vast reserves of carbon. This would lead to intense and enduring heat domes and dry spells plaguing the UK in summer.
- AMOC Shutdown: A key circulation system, the North Atlantic current, is weakening and becoming unstable due to climate change. A complete failure starting around 2030 would lead to a drastic cooling in the UK. "Crop production would face immense difficulties and water resources would be fundamentally reshaped," said the lead researcher.
- Rapid Sea Level Rise: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if polar ice in the polar regions disintegrate quickly, flooding low-lying areas. Differing from the other scenarios, this risk is already known by planners.
- Aerosol Effect: Global averages could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is drastically reduced. This unexpected result occurs because tiny specks from industrial activity block sunlight from warming the ground.
Building Resilience Against the Worst
The severe models could be utilized in planning the building of critical national infrastructure, such as new towns, nuclear power stations and flood defences. Understanding these environmental threats could also hasten the drive to cut fossil fuel emissions.
The research developed the severe projections using a combination of observed and historical experience, climate models and established principles. The possibilities omit broader worldwide issues including the devastation of food supplies and resource wars.
This work was initiated as part of a national climate resilience programme. Independent analyses have cautioned that too little consideration was being given to high-consequence, low-probability risks.
The government's climate advisors has stated that the UK must "become resilient to moderate heating" and evaluate the dangers for 4C. Previous adaptation plans have been criticised as being "inadequate" by certain experts.
