A high-ranking Russian military figure has been killed following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The incident happened on Monday morning when an IED planted beneath a vehicle was set off, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.

The committee stated that one theory under investigation suggests the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has remained silent.

Scene of the Attack

Officials have been sent to the location, which is understood to be in a southern district of the metropolis.

Media coverage indicate the detonation happened in a vehicle lot near a residential building.

Pattern of Incidents

Since the onset of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military officials have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.

This latest event follows other notable incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a automobile blast in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a explosive placed on a scooter was set off from a distance.

While a Ukrainian source earlier connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are rarely officially confirmed as a matter of standard practice.

The conflict has increasingly seen covert operations extending into the streets of the Russian capital.

The examination into General Sarvarov's death remains ongoing.
