Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Inclusion in English Ashes Team
The English team has opted for a twelve-player selection just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected spot.
The 22-year-old’s selection suggests that the visiting team will delay until the day of the first Test to determine whether the venue conditions suit four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the 12-man squad, showing there are no concerns about their pace bowler’s fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the attack, with Carse most likely to miss out if Bashir makes the final team.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has hosted five previous Tests.
In those games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
At a venue known for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers is still the more likely decision.
Spin Options Weighed
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to provide some spin while additionally bolstering the batting lineup.
However the coach has chosen to keep faith with Bashir, having said earlier this year that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon described Bashir as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for people who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon remarked of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
