The Chainsaw Man Film Dominates American Box Office in First Weekend
Can Sony claim to have achieved another hit? Following the success of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed in excess of $600 million at the box office, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has reached beyond the hundred-million-dollar milestone globally, hitting a worldwide gross of over $108 million during its debut. This movie outperformed Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its second week in theaters, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring actor Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).
Impressive Domestic and Global Results
Directed by filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a straightforward follow-up of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It brought in $18.2 million in the U.S. after a powerful $5.2M Saturday box office and $4.5M Sunday. Overseas, the MAPPA-produced film grossed $14.7M across 46 global regions, bringing its global earnings to over $60 million under Sony ($43.1M abroad, $18.2M stateside). Official totals are still pending from Sony its complete box office tally.
Parallels to Previous Blockbuster Anime Movies
Anime marketing agency White Box Entertainment noted in prior discussions, contrasting the film’s projected performance to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which made $34 million in the North America in the year 2022 and debuted with a comparable eighteen million dollars stateside. This movie's opening frame matches that marker, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar international sum currently tracks a bit short of that movie's $166.6M total earnings. Although it’s unlikely this Chainsaw Man film will earn the numbers of mega hit the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, nonetheless, it is a significant success for the studio.
Fan Engagement Campaigns Drive Box Office Dominance
Along with its affiliate Crunchyroll have successfully utilized community involvement to boost their leadership at the anime box office. The Reze Arc advertising push began at the Anime Expo in LA in the month of July with a MAPPA presentation, unique experiences, and Pochita photo ops, and later included a significant involvement at the New York Comic Con including exclusive clips, audience giveaways, and more MAPPA sessions. Additionally, there was an special preview for fans for the public and content creators as well after the last day of the convention.
Looking Ahead
2025 stands as a significant period for Japanese animation, and for Sony, which has one more animated movie releasing this year in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in the month of November.
