The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed for World Cup Despite Formal Protests from Egypt and Iran

Plans for Pride-focused events and activities throughout the city during next summer’s World Cup are proceeding unabated, even after the Egyptian and Iranian soccer associations voiced strong concerns regarding a planned “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy and External Festivities

Local organizers stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. This coincides with the tournament group match featuring Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Additionally, FIFA has a policy allowing Pride flags to be brought into the stadium.

“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s role is to prepare our city to host the matches and oversee the city experience beyond Seattle Stadium,” said a committee representative.

Legal Background Behind the Formal Complaints

Homosexuality is illegal under Iranian law, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are frequently employed to prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. The Egyptian federation stated it did not want to be linked to celebrations that “directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” In a parallel move, Iran’s football federation also raised “objections against the issue.”

FIFA's Stance on Symbols

The international federation holds operational control over match venues on matchdays. While it prohibits banners and flags with overtly political content, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” which explicitly includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was in effect at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reinforced after incidents of flags being seized.

  • This special fixture concept was devised to showcase Seattle’s proud history of championing equality.
  • An artistic competition has been commissioned to produce artwork celebrating the occasion.
  • Organizers have pledged to making sure every visitor are welcomed in the Pacific Northwest during the 48-team competition.

The region is home to one of the nation’s largest communities of Iranian descent, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities representing all nations. “Our commitment is to ensuring everyone encounter the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our region,” the statement added.
