The Contents of the Briefcase Henry Opens in Stranger Things?
Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison built from the memories of the villain Henry. Their mission for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" has them experience a defining event from Henry's youth—a discovery that potentially carries the secret to his downfall permanently.

A Journey Into the Tunnel
Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a cave that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.
They watch a Henry as a boy encounter an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the trauma wasn't just a fight for life.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission
*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a vessel into a plane later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.
The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to give to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. The man in the tunnel was that very thief.
The Briefcase's Contents
Given what is known about his research, the case would assuredly have vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would genetically impart to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.
Another possibility, the container could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day as a different person. Throughout the play, he battles the whispers of a malevolent force, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the Mind Flayer in season 2.
Confronting Terror
The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine highlights how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to fortify himself.
This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a key upper hand in the series finale to come.
