The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Superstar and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at Eighty-One Years of Age

Global audiences grieves the passing of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican reggae singer and actor whose captivating voice played a key role in spreading reggae music worldwide. The artist passed away at the age of 81.

“With deep sorrow that I announce that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am grateful for his family, close friends, peers in the arts and coworkers who shared his life’s path. To all his fans globally, please know that your encouragement was his strength throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.

Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hits such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, “I Can See Clearly Now” and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic musical style and positive temperament brought him a vast and loyal fanbase.

Beyond his musical accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 crime drama The Harder They Come, a role that received critical praise and is considered a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.

Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of artists, alongside Bob Marley and other greats, to be honored with the esteemed Order of Merit from Jamaica.
