Ex-President Donald Trump has declared that the Venezuelan government will be “handing over” approximately $2 billion worth of Venezuelan crude to the United States. This key deal would divert supplies originally bound for China while assisting Venezuela sidestep more severe oil production cuts.

“This Petroleum will be sold at its current market value, and that money will be managed by me, as President of the United States of America, to ensure it is used to help the population of Venezuela and the United States!” Trump stated in an social media post.

Venezuelan government officials and the state-owned firm PDVSA offered no response on the alleged agreement.

The Situation: An Embargo and an Arrest

Venezuela currently has vast quantities of oil loaded on tankers and held in storage that it has been prevented from shipping due to a blockade enacted by the Trump administration. This coercive strategy culminated in the toppling of Nicolás Maduro, who was captured by American military forces over the weekend.

While senior Venezuelan officials have described Maduro’s capture a kidnapping and accused the US of trying to steal the country’s vast oil reserves, Tuesday’s statement is seen as a strong sign that the current government is complying with Trump’s demand to open up to US oil companies or risk further military incursion.

Another Goal: Acquiring Greenland

Meanwhile, Trump and his aides have stated they are “looking into” a “spectrum of choices” in an effort to take control of Greenland. A presidential statement on Tuesday noted that using the US military to do so is “always an option”.

“President Trump has made it abundantly clear that securing Greenland is a national security priority of the United States, and it’s crucial to deter our adversaries in the Arctic region,” said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. “The president and his team are evaluating a series of options to achieve this significant foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the US military is one available path at the commander-in-chief’s disposal.”

Leavitt’s comments came as the top officials of key European powers voiced resistance against Trump’s longstanding desire to annex the Arctic territory.
